Engineering Manager Dagster USA

About us

We’re an early-stage, well-funded startup team with a proven track record of shipping open-source software with global adoption. We put a premium on respectful, clear, and complete communication, and we expect each other to be creative, curious, effective, and empathetic.

We believe deeply that the right tools and abstractions enable not just technological transformation, but also organizational transformation. We strive to put the user and their hard work at the center of our decision making. In practice, that means we are looking for engineers who want to write clean APIs and helpful error messages, and who always try to understand user needs when designing a new system.

All of our open-source work is done publicly. You can gain context about how we collaborate as a team and the problems we work on by exploring GitHub and looking at our code reviews.

About the role

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a high-impact team responsible for advancing Dagster’s Core API and product offerings. In this role, you’ll work on the core of Dagster’s orchestration capabilities, guiding your team to solve complex user challenges in data pipeline creation. As a leader, you will coach and empower engineers to deliver innovative, scalable solutions while fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and technical excellence. You’ll also work closely with cross-functional partners to align the team’s efforts with company objectives, driving measurable impact through high-quality engineering work.

This is a full-time, competitively paid position with benefits. We are a distributed team with offices in San Francisco, New York, and Minneapolis. We have team members all over the U.S. and we are hiring fully remote candidates in the U.S. Every employee is provided a remote work stipend to cover the cost of home office equipment and anything else that makes your remote work location comfortable, productive, or successful. And if you’d rather not work from home, we’ll cover the cost of a coworking or office space if you’re fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the team’s goals, strategy, and roadmap, delivering improvements and innovation to Dagster’s Core APIs and solving key user challenges.
  • Provide regular 1:1 coaching, manage engineers’ performance, and support their career growth.
  • Facilitate technical decision-making, drive consensus, and set the technical strategy for the team.
  • Enable seamless team execution by identifying and removing blockers, maintaining alignment between priorities and goals, and adapting processes as needed.
  • Oversee external communication and collaboration, ensuring strong relationships with other teams and stakeholders across the company.
  • Manage the team’s daily operations, including project management, sprint planning, and delivery.
  • Champion engineering excellence, promoting best practices and raising the bar across the engineering organization.

Must-have Qualifications

  • 7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience.
  • 2+ years of experience as an engineering manager, successfully leading product teams and mentoring engineers at various stages of their careers.
  • Proven ability to lead and collaborate effectively with senior engineers, stakeholders, and peers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence in articulating and defending technical and strategic viewpoints.
  • Demonstrated project management expertise, with a track record of running efficient teams and fostering a culture of continuous process improvement.
  • Experience in a high-performing engineering organization, particularly with large-scale distributed systems or B2B SaaS applications.

Nice-to-have Qualifications

  • Experience maintaining open-source libraries.
  • Prior experience as a data engineer, analytics engineer, data scientist, or building data pipelines.
  • Experience working in the data engineering or devtools industry.
